Twitter Explained: The Mom Version

My mom doesn’t understand Twitter. Big surprise. I think the possibilites as far as uses for Twitter goes are endless but all my mom, and probably your mom sees it as is another worthless bit of the internet. After our last internet-related conversation, I got to thinking about all of the different ways that someone could use it, so mom, this one’s for you.

Twitter defines itself as:

”… a service for friends, family, and co-workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?”

That sums it up decently, but doesn’t even scratch the surface of the endless amount of applications for it.

Twitter is based on a slightly different networking system then the majority of social networking sites in the sense that you can befriend or “follow” someone without them having to follow you back, or approve it. The exception of course being when privacy settings are set to require approval. This creates an instant method of networking. Once you have some people who you are following, all of their updates show up on your homepage when logged into Twitter as a feed, constantly keeping you up to date on their going-ons and whatever else they choose to share.

One of the most noted alternative uses for Twitter is as a business tool. For example, @comcastcares, which is a Twitter account run by Comcast Customer Experience Manager, Frank Eliason giving customer service via Twitter. As a Comcast customer, I have utilized Frank’s knowledge and service numerous times with great ease and success. On top of that, Frank seeks out complaints about Comcast service and helps to remedy the problem without the customer having to seek him out. Other businesses use Twitter to update customers on changes and sale offers. Jet Blue Airlines (@JetBlue) is a prominent business using Twitter for this purpose with updates such as; “Thunderstorms in the Northeast may cause delays and cancelations. Check jetblue.com or mobile.jetblue.com for the status of your flight.” There are many companies on Twitter using it in all sorts of different ways, @WholeFoods and @SweetLeafTea being a couple of my personal favorites. Be sure to check out the links at the bottom of this post for a list of companies using Twitter.

Another great way to utilize Twitter is to find out what’s going on around you. Simpleweather.com has created accounts for major cities around the United States providing updates on area weather right in your feed (e.g. @wx_houston). There are also numerous area blogs and bloggers on Twitter constantly keeping you up to date on events going on around the area. For example in Houston, @houstonist sends it’s updates to Twitter constantly letting you know what’s going on around the city.

Twitter can also be used as a great way to follow all sorts of politics. Presidential hopeful Barack Obama (@BarackObama) is a prominent user, keeping everyone who wants to know up to date on where he’s at and what he’s doing. John Edwards (@johnedwards) and Ron Paul (@RonPaulforCong) are also both frequent users of the site. @HouseFloor keeps you in the know with what’s going on at the House of Represntitives and @SenateFloor does the same for the Senate. Giving you a sort of intimate experience with the country’s inner workings.

Be sure to check out the Twitter Brand Index as compiled by Fluent Simplicity for a list of companies, organizations, and media outlets on Twitter!

Well, I hope that gives at least a small idea of the many different possibilities that Twitter offers to users and sparks a little more interest. I will now bring my endless and incoherent rambling to a close.

Because Bob Saget still hosts family shows

Ok, I’ve almost got this new theme ready to go. A few more modifications and everything will be in proper working order. The design that I’m currently using is a temporary thing as I’ll be doing a custom theme once I get caught up on projects that people besides myself are waiting on. I hope this whole site works out and everything stays beautiful and functional.

Thanks for stopping by!

Coasters!

So I was perusing the wonderful internet this morning while taking a slight break from work duties and came across these wonderful little coasters featured on Design Junky (thanks!).

They are created with a letterpress and are 3.5″ round. The set comes with eight coasters and costs a very reasonable $12. You can purchase these fine gems on Etsy from sarahparrot825. I ordered a set today, I’ll  be sure to let you know how they turn out!

Enjoy!

Oh, Internet Explorer

I’m so tired of writing and implementing hacks and workarounds to get my CSS to display properly in Internet Explorer. It seems as thought that’s all that I’ve been doing with this redesign. At least in doing so I feel better about the site’s layout and the structural soundness of it.

Recently I’ve actually moved onto trying to stritcly use conditional comments, albeit the shortest stylesheets within them as I can, but conditional comments none the less. They really help in taking care of all of Internet Explorer’s inconsistancies and what-not all in one big hoorah!

If for whatever reason you’re not familiar with conditional comments, which is probably only if you’re relatively new to CSS, or if you’ve simply been using standard hacks and workarounds for all of the problems associated with trying to write cross-browser compatible stylesheets, you should definitely check out the page on MSDN regarding such. They have definitely been making stylesheet organization much easier with all of the shenanigans that come along with writing CSS for IE.

The Wilco Book: A collaborative picture book about music.

The Wilco Book is an excellent book based around incredible photos by photographer Michael Schmelling and short essays and commentary by the members of the band, and authors Henry Miller and Rick Moody, among much more. The book focuses on the band as a whole and their surroundings, from bits about their practice space and gear, to their love for music and where they draw their inspiration from. Included with the book is a CD featuring twelve previously unreleased tunes which is quite the bit of experimental songs and demo tracks from previous albums. I managed to come across this at Half Price Books in the Rice Village, but it is also widely available at book stores worldwide as well as the official Wilco website and of course, Amazon. It was definitely worth every penny.

Posters and prints by jp33

I have always been a fan of the work of Dallas based graphic designer Jeremy Prasatik. Having done exceptional campaigns and designs for an impressive list of clientele including Juicy Couture, Neiman Marcus, Emerica, Etnies, and Sony BMG among many others, he is defintely someone whose work I admire a great deal. That said, I was very pleased with myself when I remembered that he had a few prints for sale on his website when I was on the prowl for some goodies to cover my nearly naked wall in the new space of dwelling.

This particular piece below is titled “Simply Retro Revisited” and comes to you on 11″ X 14″,  65lb matte paper for the incredible price of $15 + S&H.

Browser bookmarking via DOM, Part I

One practice that isn’t seen put into action enough in web development today is making the user experience as effortless as possible. A lot of today’s websites will have the typical links to add their site to your del.icio.us bookmarks, or StumbleUpon, furl, whatever social bookmarking site is the current trend, however, what about the typical web user? The everyday person who doesn’t have an account on del.icio.us, and uses the browser bookmarks for all their bookmarking needs? Easy methods of adding browser kept bookmarks are far from available on the websites of today, the end user is getting repeatedly overlooked to give way to one’s peers.

Adding a link to add the website as a browser bookmark is something that is very simple, and needs to be more often practiced. Below I will go into detail explaining the exact methods to use to make as cross-browser compatible of a solution as possible (Safari and Opera in part II). Standard JavaScript practices have been more or less getting ignored now that AJAX and it’s flashy, and very practical ways have been becoming the main use for any JavaScripted based coding, it almost seems like developers are slowly starting to completely overlook the basic uses of good ‘ole JS.
